Challenge: How to illuminate an unusual object.
Proposal: Illuminate the seated individual partaking in social interactions.
We designed and constructed this luminaire as a series of modular seats with light emanating from within the chair, giving rise to this sculptural “lumiCHaire”. These modular seats would not be obligated to stay in a fixed position or orientation, allowing for infinite aggregations.
We fabricated contoured plates to make up the undulating silhouette of the lumiCHaire. We envisioned that these plates could be aggregated and reconfigured to occupy an entire room — e.g. evolving from a floor surface to a chair, to a dining table. Through its rhythmic lines, the lumiCHaire creates space that grows into a glowing object of human interaction, ranging from intimate to extremely social situations.
